ALAN LEE SHAW
BIOGRAPHY

Q. When did you get into music and recording? A. I was coming to the end of art school in Cambridge around 1974/75, and was in local bands all the time. I had been constantly checking out all the bands playing at the Corn Exchange, one of which was the Pink Fairies. Twink, the drummer, who was domiciled in Cambridge at the time, had linked up with Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd fame in a band called Stars. Hanging around with Twink and Syd I struck up a rapport with Twink and got into some short lived musical projects with him.

THE RINGS
![]() |
At the end of 1975 I moved to North West London, along with musical compadre and drummer Rod Latter, seeking fame and fortune (Ho-Hum!) Twink, having also moved to the "Smoke", and the punk explosion erupting at that time, Twink, Rod and I formed a band together called The Rings. The band played around London, recording one single on Chiswick Records "I Wanna be Free". (Chiswick NS 15)

THE MANIACS
| With the demise of The Rings due to polar incompatibility, Rod and I found Robert Crash - a wild German bass player - in New York, and formed The Maniacs, a full on punk-rock band. The Maniacs played all the punk-rock sweat pits at home and abroad, appearing on the bill of the 2nd Punk Rock Festival at Mon de Marsan in France, along with The Clash, The Damned, and The Police in August 1977, releasing the single "Chelsea 77" (United Artists UP36327), plus the 17 track restrospective compilation CD "So Far.....So Loud", 1998. (Over 77CD). Sadly, punk imploded, as well as The Maniacs.

THE PHYSICALS

Just for the hell of it, I formed a band called The Physicals - 1977 to 80 - a New York Dolls influenced glam/trash/punk outfit. The band toured, releasing a four track EP "All Sexed Up" (PR/001), plus the single "Be Like Me" (Big Beat Records NS 58) with ex-Sex Pistols Paul Cook on drums and production, and a 17 track restrospective compilation CD "Skullduggery (Over 80 CD). |
BRIAN JAMES BRAINS
|
After the demise of The Physicals, I teamed up with original Damned guitarist Brian James and accompanied him in the pre Lords of the New Church days in his band, first in Brian James Brains and then The Hellions, recording and playing around live from 1980-82. |

THE HELLIONS
| Follow up band to the Brian James Brains. Played Reading Festival 1980, unreleased demos, managed by Miles Copeland. |

KIRSTY MacCOLL & JOOLS HOLLAND
| About 1981, I was introduced to Kirsty by her then manager, Frank Murray, who mentioned to me that she was looking to co-write some new songs. Over a period of a year we worked on writing demos, with Kirsty on lyrics and melodies, and myself on the music. We recorded five songs for Polydor, her record label at the time, at Regents Park Studios in London. As well as Kirsty and myself, Jools Holland, Rico, Dick Cuthell, Pino Palladino and Lu Edmonds played on the sessions. These were great quality recordings. The song titles included: (1)Goodnight Paris (2) Don't Ask Me (3) Germany, and (4) Shutting the Doors. Sadly, Polydor felt these songs did not fit her image at the time and the songs were shelved. Tragically and sadly, Kirsty died in 2000. In 2003, one of these songs - Shutting the Doors, was remixed and somewhat rearranged on Jools Holland's CD Jack O' The Green, in the illustrious company of many other world renowned artists. Hopefully, the other three remaining songs will one day be released to add to Kirsty's legacy of great singing and song writing. |

HUSH HUSH

Hush Hush was a short lived project with Chris Sol (bass) Crispin (drums), later Steve Phypers (drums). Live shows and unreleased demos 1983-84 |
HEAVEN AND THE ANGELS
![]() |
Heaven and the Angels were somewhat off the wall, with individual music and lyrics. A sort of cyber punk crossover band put together in 1986/7. Personnel included Chris Navarro and Chris Sol. The band played in the UK and Europe, and released a 5-track mini vinyl album, Angelfish and Mustang Wings. The album got some good reviews in the press and some record company interest. Sadly, it was all too much for some members, and the band folded before it realised its real potential. More studio tracks were recorded, but as yet are still unreleased. |
DEE DEE RAMONE
|
Rehearsal s, planned EP release and booked UK Tour, but Dee Dee decided to pull the plug on the project and decamped back to New York in 1990. The name of the band was Dee Dee Ramone's Deadline. |

THE DAMNED
![]() |
After forming Heaven and the Angels things went quiet until the demise of the Lords and Stiv Bator, and I teamed up with Brian James again, playing on his solo album (New Rose Records Rose 234CD) and touring Europe with his band The Brian James Gang. Having jumped ship with Brian James around 1992, I signed up on another voyage of The Damned, this time with the inimitable Mr Rat Scabies, only to be rowed in to join the infamous punk rock band The Damned from 1993-95 as song writer and rhythm guitarist, with Dave Vanian, Rat Scabies, Kris Dollimore and Moose. We toured around the world and co-wrote and recorded the album "Not of this Earth" (USA CLP 9782) (Japan TOCP 8593), and "I'm Alright Jack and the Bean Stalk" (UK Marble Orchard Records MOCD+1), Molten Lager in 1999.
